Bootleg Black Gold Whiskey Cocktail is smooth, a little sweet beverage with orange essence. This cocktail recipe is great after dinner or an anytime drink for sipping. Even if Whiskey isn’t your thing, this drink whiskey cocktail could have you changing your mind.

My Bootleg Whiskey Recipe is similar to a Whiskey and Kahlua Cocktail known as a revolver. However, I’ve amped up the booze for a dangerously smooth and delicious Black and Gold Cocktail.

You are going to love this boozy Whiskey cocktail recipe sweetened with Kahlua and finished with an essence of orange.

Why You’ll Love This Gold Cocktail

Here are some reasons why you are going to love this Kahlua Whiskey Cocktail.

It’s so easy to make! Simply mix it up, shake it in ice, strain it into a glass, and sip.

Perfect for sipping alone or as an after-dinner drink. When you want something simple to make and deliciously smooth, you will reach for this Black and Gold Cocktail.

Equipment Needed to Make Gold and Black Whiskey

Shaker. Shake this one over ice first. But strain out the ice because it is best enjoyed slowly. Ice would dilute the taste.

Strainer. Removes the ice from the drink as it is poured into your cocktail glass.

Cocktail glasses. You might as well enjoy your drink in something beautiful and have the perfect amount for an evening cocktail. I found these glasses in an antique store and just love them.

Vegetable peeler. I use a peeler to peel the rind of the orange into strips.

Ingredients For Your Black Gold Whiskey Cocktail

The best tip for making a good cocktail is to use good ingredients. Start with ingredients that stand on their own with good quality.

Good Whiskey. Use a smooth whiskey or bourbon.

Kahlua. A liqueur made from coffee beans and rum.

Orange Liqueur. Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge is our choice.

Orange Bitters. This is a cocktail flavoring made from the peels of Seville oranges, cardamom, caraway seed, coriander, anise, and burnt sugar in an alcohol base. It is not the same as standard Angostura aromatic bitters.

Orange Rind Strips. The rind adds a little flavor to the rim of your cocktail glass so that it’s the first flavor that hits your palette. It is also used for garnish.

How To Make A Bootleg Whiskey Recipe

It’s only going to take you about five minutes to make this drink, and your evening will thank you for it.

Step One. In a shaker, combine Whiskey, Kahlua, Bitters, and Grand Marnier together with a couple of ice cubes. Shake until thoroughly chilled.

Step Two. Wipe the rim of a cocktail glass with a strip of orange rind.

Step Three. Pour mixed alcohol into a cocktail glass, straining out the ice.

Step Four. Garnish with the strip of orange rind used to rim the glass.

Gold Cocktail FAQ

How Do You Serve a Black Gold Whiskey Cocktail?

This drink is served chilled “straight-up” which means shaken with ice and then strained into the glass. We don’t recommend that this cocktail be served over “rocks” (ice) because the drink will lose its flavor as it’s diluted by the ice.

Cocktails served over ice are generally drank a little quicker. This Bootleg Whiskey Recipe is meant to be sipped.

What’s the difference between whiskey and bourbon?

Bourbon is a type of whiskey. Whiskey is made from fermented grains and then aged in oak barrels. Bourbon must be made from at least 51% corn and aged in charred oak barrels.

Can I use bourbon in this recipe?

Yes. You can use any whiskey or bourbon that you prefer. That can be rye or wheat whiskey or bourbon. Irish or American, it is all about your preference. The whiskey you use will have a specific taste in this whiskey cocktail recipe. My recommendation is to choose a smooth whiskey which is usually a lower proof. High-proof whiskeys can taste and feel “hot” or burn in your mouth.

A few moderately priced whiskeys that tend to be smooth include:
Buffalo Trace Bourbon
Maker’s Mark Bourbon

Tips to Make the Perfect Black Gold Whiskey Cocktail

For a perfectly chilled cocktail, make sure you shake it in the ice thoroughly before straining it. Don’t skimp on this step even though it is tempting.

If you use a whiskey that doesn’t taste good, it’s not going to get better mixed into a cocktail.

A vegetable peeler makes great orange rind strips. Don’t press too hard so very little of the pith sticks to the strip.

Our alcoholic beverages used to consist primarily of a lite beer. From there we started enjoying the microbrews a little more, which we still do, but now we have moved into sipping cocktails like this Gold Cocktail.

John came up with the Bootleg Black Gold Whiskey Cocktail recipe, and if we still had to worry about “Prohibition”, I’d probably have a still in my basement just so I could sip one now and then.

Thank you, Leslie! I like a good bourbon but haven't tried Evan Williams. I am liking Larceny or even Templeton Rye. I'll give it a try for investigative purposes you know?
