Instructions
Set out your tray or board. If using a large star cookie cutter as a decorative focal point in the center, place it down first.
Rinse and dry all your fruits. Hull the strawberries and slice if large. Cut watermelon into triangles or star shapes.
Slice your white block cheese in half lengthwise and use a small star cookie cutter to punch out as many stars as you can. Set aside for the finishing touch.
Place your small bowls or ramekins and Babybel barrier cheeses first to create structure on the board.
Add large items in groups — strawberry pile, blueberry cluster, watermelon stars — and spread your colors across the whole board rather than grouping red, white, and blue together on one side.
Fill in the gaps with crackers, white chocolate pretzels, dried fruit, and blue cheese crumbles.
Place the white cheese stars on top of blueberry clusters for the prettiest, most patriotic look.
Add crackers just before serving to keep them crispy!
Notes
Use Babybel cheese as a moisture barrier. Juicy fruit and crackers are mortal enemies when placed next to each other. To prevent soggy crackers, stand a row of Babybel cheeses (in their wax packaging) between the fruit and the crackers. It creates a cute little "wall" that keeps everything where it belongs.White chocolate-covered pretzels also make great barriers. The chocolate coating protects the pretzel from moisture, and they look adorable lined up at the edge of a fruit pile.Start with your anchors, then fill in. Place your largest items first — the star cookie cutter (if using as a decorative focal point), any small bowls or ramekins, and big clusters of fruit. Then fill all the gaps with smaller items like crackers, dried fruit, and crumbles.Cut the cheese into stars. Slice your block of white cheese in half lengthwise, then use a small star-shaped cookie cutter to press out as many stars as you can. The leftover scraps? Cube them up and toss them on the board too — nothing goes to waste!Add crackers at the last minute. If you're building the board more than 20–30 minutes ahead of serving, leave the crackers off. Add them right before the board goes on the table so they stay crispy.Use whatever tray you have. You do not need a fancy board. A large cutting board, a rectangular baking tray, a big platter, or even a lazy Susan all work. Just make sure it's food-safe and sturdy enough to carry when loaded up.
