Our Chocolate Espresso Martini has become our go-to drink for special occasions. This rich and creamy cocktail combines the bold flavor of espresso with smooth chocolate vodka and a touch of amaretto to create something truly special thatโs perfect for date nights, celebrations, or any time you want to treat yourself. The best part? It only takes about 5 minutes to make from start to finish!

Why I Love This Recipe
My son introduced us to this chocolate espresso martini when he came home for Christmas, and it immediately became a family favorite. We love it because it tastes like a dessert in a glass โ smooth, sweet, and absolutely delicious. Now itโs become our go-to drink for romantic dinners, girlsโ nights, or any time we want to turn an ordinary evening into something special.
What makes this recipe so special is how it combines three amazing flavors in one glass. The rich espresso wakes you up while the chocolate and amaretto make everything taste smooth and fancy.
Important note: This drink is stronger than it tastes! The coffee and chocolate flavors hide just how much alcohol is in here, so please enjoy responsibly. I recommend limiting yourself to one or two of these in an evening โ trust me on this one!
Key Ingredient Notes
While youโll find the full ingredient list in the recipe card below, I wanted to highlight a few important ingredients:

- Espresso or Strong Coffee: You can use freshly brewed espresso, leftover coffee from your morning pot, or even instant espresso powder mixed with hot water. Just make sure itโs cooled down before you add it to your shaker! Cold brew coffee also works great and gives a smooth flavor.
- Chocolate Vodka: This is the star of the show! You can find chocolate vodka at most liquor stores. Look for it in the flavored vodka section. If you canโt find chocolate vodka, you can use regular vodka and add a splash of chocolate liqueur instead.
- Amaretto: This sweet almond-flavored liqueur adds a nutty richness that makes everything come together. Donโt skip it โ itโs what makes this drink special!
- Coffee Liqueur: Kahlรบa is the most popular brand, but any coffee liqueur will work. This adds extra coffee flavor and a touch of sweetness.
- Ice: Use plenty of ice when shaking! This makes the drink nice and cold and gives it that slightly frothy top.
Pro Tips for Making Perfect Chocolate Espresso Martinis
Before you head to the recipe card, here are some helpful tips Iโve learned from making this drink many times:
Pour Espresso over ice
Add remaining alcohol
- Chill Your Glass: Pop your martini glass in the freezer for 10 minutes before making the drink. A cold glass keeps your cocktail perfectly chilled and looks fancy with that frosty coating.
- Shake It Hard: When you shake your cocktail shaker, really shake it! Shake for at least 15-20 seconds to get everything super cold and create that lovely foam on top. If you donโt have a cocktail shaker, a mason jar with a tight lid works great too.
- Use Fresh Espresso: If you can make fresh espresso, it tastes amazing in this drink. But donโt stress โ regular strong coffee works perfectly fine. Just let it cool to room temperature first so it doesnโt melt all your ice.

- Strain It Well: Use a fine strainer or the built-in strainer on your shaker to keep ice chips out of your glass. You want a smooth, silky drink.
- Make It Pretty: The garnish isnโt just for looks โ coffee beans floating on top give a hint of whatโs inside, and chocolate shavings or a drizzle make it look bakery-fancy!
Serving Suggestions
This chocolate espresso martini is perfect as an after-dinner drink when you want something that feels like dessert but also gives you a little energy boost. Itโs also great for:
- Date Nights: Skip the restaurant and make these at home for a romantic evening
- Valentineโs Day: The chocolate makes it perfect for this special occasion
- New Yearโs Eve: Ring in the new year with something fancy
- Girlsโ Night: Serve these with appetizers and your friends will think youโre the best hostess ever
- Brunch Cocktails: Yes, this has caffeine! Itโs perfect for a boozy brunch
To serve, simply pour into chilled martini glasses and top with three coffee beans (the traditional garnish) or get creative with chocolate shavings, cocoa powder, or even a small piece of chocolate on the rim. Some people like to rim the glass with chocolate syrup first โ just dip the edge in syrup, then in cocoa powder. So pretty!
I like to serve these with a small plate of chocolates or biscotti on the side for nibbling.
Storage and Leftovers
Hereโs the thing โ this drink is best enjoyed fresh! The ice-cold temperature and that frothy top are what make it special, so I donโt recommend making it ahead.
However, you can prep some things in advance:

- Brew your espresso or coffee and keep it in the fridge for up to 3 days
- Chill your glasses ahead of time
- Measure out your ingredients and have everything ready to go
If you somehow have leftover cocktail (which is rare!), you can store it in the fridge in a sealed container for up to 24 hours. Just give it a quick shake with ice before serving to get it cold and frothy again.

Variations to Try
- Mocha Martini: Add a tablespoon of chocolate syrup to make it extra chocolatey and a bit sweeter
- White Chocolate Version: Replace the chocolate vodka with vanilla vodka and add white chocolate liqueur for a lighter, creamier drink
- Spicy Kick: Add a tiny pinch of cayenne pepper or cinnamon to give it a warm, spicy twist
- Dairy-Free: Use a splash of coconut cream or almond milk for a creamy texture without dairy
- Lower Alcohol: Cut the vodka in half and add a splash of cold brew coffee concentrate for a lighter version

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make this without espresso? Yes! Use strong brewed coffee, cold brew, or even instant espresso mixed with water. Just make sure itโs cooled down first.
Is this drink really that strong? Yes! It tastes sweet and smooth, but it packs a punch. The chocolate and coffee flavors hide the alcohol taste, so itโs easy to drink too many. Stick to one or two.
Can I make a big batch for a party? You can mix all the ingredients together in a pitcher (without ice), then shake individual servings with ice as guests arrive. This keeps it fresh and cold.
What if I donโt have a cocktail shaker? Use a mason jar, a water bottle, or even a protein shaker bottle! As long as it seals tight, you can shake your cocktail in it.
Why does my drink look flat? You probably didnโt shake it long enough or hard enough. Shake for at least 20 seconds with lots of ice to thoroughly chill and combine your coffee cocktail.

Delicious! Not sure if I could stop at one and they would for sure keep me up after 9.30! ๐ A great party drink! Happy FF!

Thank you for stopping by celyn!
These look just amazing!! How decadently delicious!
I think there might be a conflicting effect on me here: awakeness from caffeine vs snooze from the booze. Hard to say which one would win out.
I know! Such a problem to have. ๐
Aw, lovely post, Julie! We are so lucky to have Angie bringing us all together. These could also be called Mike’s Martinis on Crack! You just can’t stop at one! Happy weekend and happy FF!
Thanks Selma! That would be another great name. Lethal could also be in the name. You have a wonderful weekend too!
Yay, more booze!! These look amazing, go Mike! I love the addition of amaretto too! These will definitely keep us going all week long, just don’t hold my jokes about parrots against me in the morning haha
Thanks Michelle! I have made these switching out the amaretto with kahlua. Also a yum yum.
Wow, I think this is the best drink EVER! Chocolate, caffeine and booze, whoo hoo!
It is really really good! I don’t recommend drinking them if you plan on going to bed anytime soon though. Just saying maybe from experience after I took these pictures. ๐ Thanks Lily!
I can imagine, wide awake and buzzing lol
Looks like an amazing Valentines drink to me. Perhaps brunch?…. Enjoy the party celebration! Cheers!
Thanks Debbie! It would be great any of those times except to relax for bed. It’s amazing what one little ole shot of espresso will do. ๐
What a wonderful concoction you’ve created Julie, or should I say your Mike created? You certainly taught him well, first things first eh? Never mind manners, respecting your elders blah blah! :). Would love to try one of those, and those roses are just gorgeous. Your picture portrays a celebration and a festive occasion and we have it in spades here at Angie’s FF anniversary. I’ve arrived late, but am making my rounds. Happy FF anniversary!
Hah! My boy is a good kid. He would watch out for his ole Ma after one or two of these. ๐ I had a nice dinner with friends and bought the roses. These did come in handy with these pics. It’s nice having flowers around in winter or anytime! Have a great weekend Loretta!
What a unique (at least to me) drink! I would love to try one of these!
I just had my first one at Christmas and just replaced the bottle. I did share though I swear!
I like the cordials, but not really the vodka. I am not much of a drinker, so I am also not one to guess how the drink would taste. It may be very tasty.
I don’t suggest you try this one. You won’t remember where you finished it. ๐ . Thanks for visiting though!
That is true. ๐ One drink and I am toast.
Whoooaaa! I am swooning over here, Julie! Your cocktails are more than divine…I think I just might need to try another one….later of course! Wow! Wow! Wow!
I’m glad that you like them! Cheers!
Oh my… those look so sophisticated and yummy!!! And great for Valentine’s Day that is coming up ๐
The first one is sophisticated and yummy. It goes down hill from there. Thanks! ๐
I’m not sure I could have much more than a sip of one of these these days, my drinking ability is that bad (plus chocolate in drinks isn’t something I can have much of) but they still sound great and sure I’ll find someone who can help me out with the rest ๐
If you don’t tolerate alcohol well, or even if you do, these can be very dangerous! Thanks Caroline.
I love a good boozy drink. Especially one like this because itโs a treat with a treat. Looks good.
Thanks Chitra! I think you will like this one then. Happy FF!
Oooo. I’m pretty full but I’ll have this for my dessert after stuffing myself at Fiesta Friday. Now my feasting is complete and I need a nap. ๐
I think FF is definitely off to a great start! It’s a good thing it was never a Monday thing!
I love learning about new ways of cooking from people all over the world too. So glad to meet you through Fiesta Friday!
Thank you!
They look amazing Julie-a delicious intoxication!
Thank you Jan! It is dangerous!
It appears Mike was raised right! And, perhaps by a good “bar” teacher?!? This drink sounds fabulous, Julie. Delicious ingredients and your photos definitely make me want one. ๐
It is the weekend right? ๐ Thank you Nancy.
Bet that wakes you up!!!!!
Honestly I made it during the day for pictures and then saved it for the evening. Big mistake. The shot of espresso isn’t a great idea unless you don’t plan on bed anytime soon. ๐ Thanks for visiting!
Fantastic Cocktail! I am dying to try it out! I would love to get my hands on a coffee vodka. These look absolutely stunning ๐
It can be a bit difficult to find. We found this at a large liquor store. The Grocers didn’t carry it. Happy FF!
I love each and every ingredient in this martini. I can only imagine how well they taste together! ๐ I also love the arrangement with the roses. So precious! ๐
Thanks Ana! They really pack a punch! I bought the roses for a late New Years Eve dinner I had on Saturday, and I have really enjoyed them all week.
Oh my gosh! These sound amazing!
Thanks Andrea! Yummy indeed!
Enjoy the party!!!!!
Thanks Elaine! It will be fun. I hope you enjoy it too.
These are killer Julie! Gorgeous and a lovely recipe!
