The Paloma is one of Mexico’s most beloved cocktails — some say it’s even more popular there than the margarita! It’s the perfect Cinco de Mayo cocktail, but honestly, once you make it, you’ll want it all summer long. It’s that good.

Whether you’re hosting a backyard get-together or just unwinding after a long week, this easy grapefruit tequila drink is the sipper you’ve been waiting for. Let me show you just how simple it is!

Ingredient Notes and Tips

You only need a handful of ingredients to make this tequila grapefruit cocktail shine. Here’s what to know before you start:

Paloma recipe ingredients: sparkling water, grapefruit juice, salt, lime juice, agave syrup, and blanco tequila. Hostess At Heart
  • Blanco Tequila – Also called silver tequila, it’s the best choice for a Paloma. Clean, slightly citrusy, and smooth. Always look for ‘100% agave’ on the label. Patron Silver, Don Julio Blanco, and Espolòn Blanco are all great picks.
  • Grapefruit Juice – Use red or pink for the best color and a sweeter flavor. Fresh-squeezed is always top choice, but a good quality refrigerated juice works in a pinch.
  • Fresh Lime Juice – Please don’t skip this! Bottled lime juice just doesn’t compare. A half ounce of fresh lime juice adds that bright zip that makes this drink special.
  • Agave Syrup – Optional but recommended. Just a small amount balances any tartness from the grapefruit. Add it to your shaker and taste as you go — a little goes a long way.
  • Sparkling Water – Adds the light, bubbly finish that makes a Paloma so refreshing. Swap for grapefruit soda like Fresca if you want a sweeter drink and extra grapefruit flavor.
  • Coarse Salt – For rimming the glass. The classic finishing touch that balances all those citrus flavors beautifully.

How to Make a Paloma Cocktail

Chilling a cocktail glass by stirring ice into it.
  1. Chill Your Glass – Fill a lowball or Tom Collins glass with ice and let it sit while you prep everything else. A cold glass keeps your cocktail colder, longer.
  1. Shake It Up – Pour that ice from the glass into your cocktail shaker. Add 2 oz blanco tequila, 1 oz grapefruit juice, 1/2 oz fresh lime juice, and a small drizzle of agave syrup. Give it a good shake until everything is nice and cold.
  1. Salt the Rim – Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass, then dip it in coarse salt. You want just one side — not the whole rim — so every sip has a little salty contrast without being overwhelming.
  1. Pour and Top – Pour your shaker contents right into the glass (ice and all, that’s how I love it!). If you prefer a neater drink, strain out the ice. Then add 1 oz of sparkling water and give it a gentle stir.
  2. Garnish and Serve – Tuck in a grapefruit wedge or a lime wheel on the rim and you’re done. Cheers!

Pro Tip: Taste your shaker before you pour. If it needs a touch more sweetness, add a drop more agave. If it needs more citrus punch, squeeze in a little extra lime.

Paloma Variations

Once you master the classic, try one of these fun twists on this easy tequila drink:

  • Paloma with Grapefruit Soda – Swap the sparkling water for Fresca or another grapefruit soda. Sweeter and bubblier — great for those who love a less boozy sip.
  • Spicy Paloma – Add 2–3 slices of fresh jalapeño to the shaker before shaking. The heat plays beautifully with the citrus!
  • Frozen Paloma – Blend all the ingredients with a cup of ice for a slushy, frozen version perfect on a hot summer day.
  • Mezcal Paloma – Swap the blanco tequila for mezcal and get a smoky, complex twist that cocktail lovers crave.
  • Paloma Mocktail – Skip the tequila and use sparkling water or grapefruit soda as the base. Add grapefruit juice, lime, and a tiny drizzle of agave for a gorgeous alcohol-free version.

How to Store It

The Paloma is really best made fresh — the sparkling water loses its fizz quickly once mixed. That said, here’s how to get ahead:

  • Pre-mix the base: Combine the tequila, grapefruit juice, lime juice, and agave in a pitcher and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Add sparkling water right before serving.
  • Batch for a crowd: This recipe scales up easily! Multiply the ingredients by the number of servings you need and keep the base chilled. Add the sparkling water right before serving.
  • Leftover grapefruit juice: Store any unused fresh-squeezed juice in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

How to Serve It

  • Glass choice: A lowball (rocks) glass or a tall Tom Collins glass both work great. Use your prettiest glassware!
  • For Cinco de Mayo: Set up a Paloma bar with all the ingredients and let guests build their own. It’s interactive and fun!
  • Summer entertaining: Serve alongside grilled shrimp tacos, guacamole and chips, or a fresh corn salsa. The citrusy brightness cuts right through rich, savory flavors.
  • Date night: Skip the salt rim and strain the ice for a more polished, elegant presentation.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Blanco tequila
  • 1 oz grapefruit juice red or pink
  • ½ oz lime juice fresh
  • 1 oz sparkling water
  • ¼ oz agave necter or simple syrup

Instructions

  • Chill a lowball or Tom Collins glass by filling it with ice.
  • Once the glass is chilled, pour the ice into a shaker and add the tequila, grapefruit juice, lime juice, and agave syrup.
  • Rim the glass with coarse salt.
  • Pour the shaker contents into the glass. I enjoy the ice in my cocktail but you can strain it out if that's what you prefer.
  • Add the sparkling water to the glass and give it a quick stir. Add a garnish using either a wedge of grapefruit or a lime wheel.

Notes

Ice can be added to the cocktail glass or strained to serve neat.
We use a small amount of agave and adjust the sweetness to the shaker before pouring it into the glass.
Sparkling water can be substituted with a grapefruit soda such as “Fresca”.
