Ingredient Notes & Tips

Ingredients: baby yellow yukon potatoes, shredded parmesan, parsley, minced garlic, oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder - Hostess At Heart

Baby Yukon Gold Potatoes โ€“ These are perfect because theyโ€™re naturally creamy and hold their shape well when smashed. Look for potatoes that are similar in size so they cook evenly.

Avocado Oil โ€“ This oil has a high smoke point, making it perfect for getting those crispy edges. You can substitute with olive oil if needed.

Fresh Garlic โ€“ Minced garlic gives the best flavor, but garlic powder works in a pinch. Donโ€™t skip the garlic. Please donโ€™t use the pre-minced garlic in the jar. Itโ€™s soaked in citric acid for preservation and loses the flavor of fresh.

Parmesan Cheese โ€“ Use freshly grated Parmesan for the best taste and melting. The pre-shredded kind works too, but is often mixed with non-clumping ingredients, which makes it drier and less tasty. Fresh tastes so much better.

Fresh Parsley โ€“ This adds a pop of color and fresh flavor that balances the rich cheese perfectly.

How to Make Parmesan Smashed Potatoes

Making these garlic parmesan smashed potatoes is super easy! First, youโ€™ll boil the baby potatoes until theyโ€™re fork-tender โ€“ this usually takes about 12-15 minutes. The key is making sure theyโ€™re cooked through but not falling apart.

After draining and cooling the potatoes for 5 minutes, transfer them to your baking sheet. Hereโ€™s where the fun begins โ€“ gently smash each potato with the bottom of a glass or ramekin. You want them flattened but still in one piece.

Drizzle everything with avocado oil, then sprinkle on the minced garlic, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and parmesan cheese. The first bake at 450ยฐF for 15 minutes gets them golden, then flip them over and bake another 15 minutes for maximum crispiness. Finish with fresh parsley and youโ€™re done!

Recipe Variations

Herb Smashed Potatoes โ€“ Try adding fresh rosemary or thyme along with the parsley for an herb garden flavor.

Spicy Kick โ€“ Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or paprika for some heat.

Different Cheeses โ€“ Swap Parmesan for sharp cheddar, gruyere, or pecorino romano for different flavors.

Loaded Style โ€“ Top with crispy bacon bits and green onions after baking for loaded potato vibes.

Lemon Zest โ€“ Add some fresh lemon zest with the parsley for a bright, citrusy finish.
