Ingredients you’ll need for Baked French Toast Casserole
All of the ingredients are listed on the recipe, but I wanted to share a couple of important notes here.
Bread. You don’t need much for this recipe, but you do need bread. The better your bread choice the better the casserole. The good news is, day old bread that has lost its usefulness in a sandwich is still an excellent choice for this dish!
What you don’t need is eggs! If you have a craving for French toast but don’t have eggs on hand, this recipe has got you covered. A simple mixture of milk, brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla will do the trick.
Milk. Whole milk is best because the fat content adds richness. Use eggnog for a holiday version. You can also use flavored coffee creamers and leave out the vanilla extract. Any milk will work including nut varieties.

This recipe could not be any easier. Slice your bread into cubes with a sharp knife and fill the dish. Mix the other ingredients and pour them over the bread. Combine the topping ingredients and sprinkle over the whole dish. Bake and enjoy. No stress.
Hostess Tips
Double the recipe to fill a 9 x 13 pan. You can cut this into 9 small slices or 4 large slices.
The top should feel a bit hard/crusty when done in the oven, however, underneath will be soft and delicious!
Do not rip your bread! This will cause the bread to become dense. We want the cubes of bread nice and fluffy before baking, as it will bake down slightly. Instead, slice the bread into cubes with a sharp knife.
Frequently Asked Questions

There are a few reasons why it may be soggy. It could be that it wasn’t in the oven long enough, the oven wasn’t hot enough, or the bread may not have absorbed all of the milk mixture because the bread went into the oven.
It’s also helpful that your bread isn’t too fresh. If you want to make it in the morning, let your fresh bread sit out overnight.
What kind of bread should I use for French Toast Casserole?
Soft bread such as a brioche or challah is amazing. You can make our Homemade Brioche Loaf or Challah for perfect results.

Storing Baked French Toast Casserole
Refrigerator storage: Let the casserole cool completely first. Cover tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
Freezer storage: Cool completely before storing. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap, then a layer of aluminum foil (or use a freezer-safe container). Label with the date and freeze for up to 2-3 months.
Thawing
From refrigerator: No thawing needed – you can reheat directly from the refrigerator.
From the freezer: The best method is to remove it from the freezer to the refrigerator and let thaw overnight. For a quicker option, thaw at room temperature for 1-2 hours if you’re in a hurry.
Reheating
Whole casserole: The oven method works best. Cover with foil and heat at 350°F for about 20 to 30 minutes until warmed through. Remove the foil for the last 5 minutes if you want to crisp up the top again.
Individual portions: Microwave individual servings for 1-2 minutes on medium power (check and add more time if needed). A toaster oven is also great – heat for 5-7 minutes at 350°F.
Tips: Add a little maple syrup or butter before reheating to keep it moist. If it seems dry, sprinkle 1-2 tablespoons of milk over the top before reheating.
